Traditional Malay medicine encompasses various kinds of ritual ceremonies intended to communicate with the world of spirits to determine whether the nature of an illness is physical or psychological. In such ceremonies, the aim is to summon and exorcise the spirits causing illness. A ritualist serves as a medium, and a small ensemble often provides the musical component.

Malay traditional massage

Malay massage makes extensive use of herbal oils. Massage is urut in Malay language. The idea of massage is to relieve pain.

They are many kinds of massage. A silat practitioner sometimes practices massage. The massage is one using hands while extracting some appropriate verse of text from the Quran.

After child birth, mothers are massaged for at least three consecutive days beginning on the second day after delivery. Usually the massage is done by Mak bidan.

The purpose of this massage is help to revive blood circulation and to correct repositioning of the uterus. During the massage, plain coconut oil or that boiled with rempah ratus and roots is used.

In traditional healing system, broken bones and sprains are considered as usual illness or sakit biasa. Traditionally it will be treated by a specialist known as bomoh urut.

In Malay peninsula, the bomoh urut are good for muscular, aches, sprains and abdominal pain.

However for fractures of bones and other injuries are often taken to traditional experts or bomoh patah who specialized in bone setting and remedial massage.
