Bunga raya in traditional medicine

Bunga raya or Hibiscus rosa-sinensis especially bunga raya putih is considered to have medicinal properties in the traditional medicine. Malay also named it as Kembang sepatu, Bebaru.

Bunga raya cools the body and help eliminated excess fluid in the body. It is used in the treatment of urinary disorder, cancer, constipation, cough, cystitis, debility, diarrhea, dysentery, dysmenorrhea, fever, menstrual disorder and failing hair.

Bunga raya putih can be used to treat cancer. The leaves also the flowers are traditional used for promoting hair growth and for its anti-greying properties.

There was a study that the petroleum ether extract of leaves and flowers of hibiscus rosa-sinensis for potential on hair growth by in vivo and in vitro methods. Result showed that the leaf extract had more hair growth potency than the flower extract.

Bunga raya or hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the national flower of Malaysia. The flowers are a glorious food and lively decoration, their flavor is tart, lemon-like, and refreshing.
